Studio visit with Bryan Ida. Thoughts on Origin Myths and Fate…
Movement, Fluid and Light
Art is not an object it is the inspiration to feel deeply
Instead of thinking about dominance and aggression I would like to think about humanity and the human condition.

“Remnants” 20×16
I am having an ongoing conversation in paint using the concept of layering and burying to explore the idea of recollection within a symbolic landscape. Like an archeologist that digs and reveals fragments of human history the layers represent the passage of time and the importance of memory.
Memory is the reduction and refinement of an original experience that has been enhanced with emotional content and value. These experiences identify with images that come to represent a place and time in our personal history. I try to collect and assemble the assortment of impressions and distill them to their essence and lay down the elements in form, composition, and color.
Within this broader conversation I am also exploring a second theme, which is the creation of a visual language that represents and redefines the word littoral. Littoral is defined as the zone where the land and sea come together. A meeting place of disparate worlds where opposites collide and interact. I explore this area looking at the affect of human intervention on what began as a natural landscape and I work to reformulate the word and expand it to include an alternate visual definition.
Burying ideas and images deep within the construct of a composition conveys a sense of connectivity as each layer interacts with the previous, but there also exist the feeling of disconnect and isolation that is congruous with the notion of urban life. It is this exploration of color, composition and light that entices and drives me.

“In the Moment” 38×33
What is most compelling, I found the forms and images simplifying in the composition, giving the color fields a chance to interact and breathe.

“The Repercussions of Us” 16×20
A work of art is approached from many perspectives and directions. These varied paths unite and intersect to form a dimension and variety.

“The Day and the Night Together” 23×17
When there is nothing else and only you alone can feel it
Art is about the making, taking steps. Not necessarily walking as that implies pre-meditation to move toward, but taking steps. Maybe backwards maybe forwards or up or down. It’s the creative challenges realized and uncovered then attempted to solve.

“On the Perspective of Being Wrong” 34×48
A painting must touch an emotion to last. Without emotion a painting is just an illustration. Its the experience in the present and in memory.
“Landplay” 20 x 16
Invention is born of dissension not consensus. I am trying new directions, finding new paths, some that dead end and some that flourish.

“Three Views”
Horizon fill the negative space of the composition and it strengthens the relationship between foreground and background. They are the blurred distance that is counterpoint to the hard edged foreground. Both contain fragments that are based on the incomplete visions that make up our memories

“Trance , Connection, and Drift”
Waves are the perfect metaphor for life. Fleeting constantly moving and pushing forward propelled by a mysterious force up out and in the end, back to where it began.
“Repercussions of a Heartfelt Dream”
I am having an ongoing conversation in paint about the idea of layers and how it relates to the everyday. Like an archeologist that digs and reveals pieces and fragments of human history the layers represent the passage of time and the importance of memory.
UFOlogy

Thrilled to be in a group show with and incredible group of artist taking place at Outpost Projects in Joshua Tree.
http://outpostprojects.org/current-exhibition/
UFOLOGY, curated by Kio Griffith is a gathering of artists exploring territory, the space in between and it’s public definition devised as a plan, sketch, diagram, model or an experimental construction. It’s about pioneering, exploration, and colonization. The surreal narrative premise is that a team of explorers (invited artists) will gather at base camp (Outpost Projects) where the Antarctic continent will land, displaced from current global warming conditions. The selected works may seem to emit supernaturalistic, otherworldly, futuristic, psychic overtones and will transfuse one or more of the five senses, flaring into synesthesia.

The Breaking Point
“I like what is in the work– the chance to find yourself. Your own reality– for yourself, not for others– what no other man can ever know. They can only see the mere show, and never can tell what it really means.” Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness

“Dusk in the Blink of an Eye”
I grew up playing music and I was always fascinated by the idea of layering. Music is built by layering instrument upon instrument to create a complex and expressive whole. Visual ideas can be expressed in the same way layer upon layer burying ideas and images deep within the construct of a composition and slowly building to a state of relative completeness. Simple impressions and emotions brought together and mixed to form a more complex whole.

“Wake”
There are so many wonderful mistakes buried deep within this piece. The basic raw material of the work is initially brought forth in an unclear and muddled form and I work to distill and shape the material to create a context and give the work definition and clarity. There are three complete attempts buried deep within this piece that contribute to the completeness of the process.
What is art without the courage to fail? From the perspective of fear it is stepping without looking, moving without knowing and going places never imagined. It is the ability to fail and get hurt and find all the new possibilities and direction in the process of healing.

“Something on the Horizon”
Through the palette an artist travels a path that contributes in the expression their individuality. We explore and reveal original ideas that allow color to represent and express real emotional content.
As melody and harmony work in the ear, so does color and composition works on the eye.
